2014 STEM Fair @ Root
Thursday, February 27th
Have you ever wondered why your cookies sometimes burn on the bottom? Which paper towel brand absorbs the most spilled milk? What is the strongest shape for building a bridge? Great questions! Use the scientific method, do an experiment, and find an answer. All Root students in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade can enter the STEM Fair @ Root and do fun experiments like these! Don’t miss your chance...
STEM FAIR ENTRY FORMS are due by Wednesday, December 18, 2013. Get your entry form online or at school (front office, media center, Technology lab, STEM lab). After you turn in your signed entry form, you will get an exclusive STEM @ Root Mood Pencil and a STEM @ Root Scientific Journal.
After you have worked on your project for a while, it will be time to turn in your STEM FAIR CONFIRMATION FORM, which is due by Wednesday, January 15, 2014. You can download the confirmation form or pick one up at school (front office, media center, Technology lab, STEM lab).
Each student who presents a project at the STEM Fair on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 will get a super-bonus extra chance to go on the Magical Mystery Tour field trip. We will draw extra names from the list of Root students who present their STEM Fair projects on March 28, 2014. STEM Fair Awards will be presented to all participants during STEM Family Night on March 25th from 7:30-8 pm.
And wait, it gets even better...if your class has at least 75% of the students in the STEM Fair (that means 3/4 of you doing projects), you win a movie lunch. The class with the highest participation rate in each grade will get a bonus STEM enrichment activity too!
Do you have questions about ideas, the scientific method, or how to do a STEM Fair project? Here are some good places to find answers:
1. STEM Fair @ Root "Rules, Secrets for Success, & Hints" handout
2. Sign up for free STEM Fair @ Root help sessions
3. Check out some real examples of past STEM Fair @ Root projects
4. See our STEM Fair @ Root frequently asked questions page
5. Look in a book--Ms. Dozier has a bucket of books in her room, and Mrs. Torborg has a shelf full of books in the Root Media Center. In addition to the "science project" books, read some general science and engineering books and look for interesting facts that you'd like to explore.
6. Take a look at the Scientific Method Guided Worksheets and resources
